Abstract

The growing migration of third-country students to Lithuania has increased the need for effective integration strategies in higher education institutions. However, the role of sustainable communication in this process remains insufficiently explored in the Lithuanian academic context. This study examines how sustainable communication principles contribute to the integration of third-country students and the development of social sustainability in higher education. The research applies a mixed methods approach combining a survey of 158 third-country students at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, a focus group with academic staff, and document analysis. The findings reveal that communication challenges are not limited to language barriers but are also shaped by cultural difference in academic communication norms. A significant proportion of students reported difficulties related to information clarity, accessibility and interaction with local students. The results demonstrate that sustainable communication – based on clarity, accessibility, feedback and cultural sensitivity – can reduce informational gaps, strengthen intercultural interaction, and support both academic and social integration. Sustainable communication should be considered a strategic mechanism for fostering socially sustainable and inclusive higher education environments.
