Lithuanian Mathematical Society Mathematics Teaching Research Group

Educational reforms and changes in general education programs are worrying and encourage action. The greatest concern is the issues of improving mathematics teaching and learning, for which the the Lithuanian Mathematical Society's Mathematics Teaching Research Group (hereinafter referred to as the Group) was established on June 21, 2023.

The Group aims to

  • unite the communities of mathematicians and mathematics teachers;
  • become the unit representing Lithuania in the international organization ICMI (The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction);
  • cooperate with the Lithuanian Mathematics Teachers Association;
  • cooperate with the Lithuanian Educational Research Association.

The goals of the Group:

  • bring together mathematics teaching research enthusiasts in order to improve the quality of mathematics teaching research;
  • disseminate information about mathematics teaching research conducted in the world and in Lithuania;
  • encourage young people to become mathematics teaching researchers;
  • participate in shaping the results of research based on mathematics teaching policy in Lithuania.

The group's tasks are:

  • to discuss and encourage the development of school mathematics support based on mathematical reasoning and competence development;
  • to provide input into the development of mathematics standards (mathematics curriculum) for schools, colleges and universities;
  • to research and provide recommendations for improving existing textbooks;
  • to develop methodological tools and organize seminars for improving teacher qualifications.
