Effective risk management requires thorough examination of the nature and uniqueness of risks, which occur in a given area. Similarly, in risk management carried out in the construction industry, the first steps to be taken are to accurately identify risks and determine risk factors. This applies, in particular, to large construction and assembly companies, which act as general contractors and tend to conduct big and risky investment projects. Therefore, contractors need to possess appropriate knowledge in this area. These problems are addressed in the paper, which is aimed at discussing risks that occur in production activities performed by construction and assembly companies. The background to the deliberations included in the paper is the results of the empirical research done among a selected group of the largest contractors in Poland.
