Abstract

The article presents a systematic review of scientific literature from 2019–2025 analyzing the structural and functional properties of fungal mycelium in the context of sustainable materials. The review revealed that mycelium composites exhibit adjustable density (40–552 kg/m³), compressive strength (0.17–1.1 MPa), thermal conductivity (0.03–0.05 W/mK), effective sound absorption (>0.70 at 1000 Hz), and complete biological degradation within several weeks or months. These properties depend on the fun gal species, substrate composition, environmental parameters, and thermal processing conditions. Mycelium composites are identified as a promising alternative to polystyrene, polyurethane, and certain wood-based materials, particularly in the context of the circular economy and sustainable construction.
