One of the missions of the Mathematics Education Research Group is related to the dissemination of the ideas of the ICMI Commission in Lithuania.
As mathematics education became universal and compulsory, and in order to maintain the level of mathematics education, the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction was founded in 1908, the members of which were Germany, England and Switzerland.
The main goal of the organization is to promote better mathematics education at all levels.
The organization has a mandate from the International Mathematical Society to analyze the similarities and differences in secondary mathematics education in different countries. The ICMI General Assembly meets every four years for international congresses. In 2024, this assembly took place in Sydney, Australia, together with the 15th ICME Congress. The next, 16th ICME Congress will take place in Prague, Czech Republic, in 2028.
Currently, 93 countries belong to the organization. Each country can appoint its own representative, who becomes an intermediary between the organization and the mathematics education community of that country. Lithuania is represented in this organization by Prof. habil. dr. Rimas Norvaiša.
