Study of reducing congestion in urban area through interaction between public and private transport

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to increase the interaction between public and private transport through Park & Ride and Bike & Ride programmes and other popular widely used solu-tions. After analyzing the importance of public transport as a part of the transport system of the city, level of automobilization (576 cars per 1000 citizens), using various statistics, exploring case studies of good practice and presenting the main P+R and B+R operating concepts. The structure of citizens’ journeys during last 30 years has changed drastically, while private transport usage increased five times. This has led to enormous traffic jams in cities and its surrounding areas. Specific suggestions, such as using Park and Ride systems in cities have been proved.
