One of the main aspects of creating economic and social well-being in the state is equal rights for women and men. To date, stereotypes created by a patriarchal society are taken into account where men and women have their own roles, gender- appropriate jobs and responsibilities. In the labor market, everything is often based on stereotypes, there is a tendency for women to choose or be assigned to jobs that require less knowledge and education, pay, responsibilities and obligations differ, while men are more likely to be in management positions. Wages are one of the indicators that help to analyze the labor market and its changes, to identify the segregation of women and men in Lithuania, which later determines a lower state social insurance old-age pension. The Gender Equality Index is a composite indicator that measures the complex concept of gender equality and, within the framework of the European Union’s policy, helps to monitor progress on gender equality across the European Union, provides more visibility for improvement and ultimately helps policy-makers develop more effective gender mainstreaming tools. The aim of this article is to perform a literature and statistical analysis of the current situation in the labor market and to present the main differences in gender equality in the country compared to other European Union countries.
