Research on factors influencing emigration from Lithuania

Abstract

Emigration is a major problem for Lithuania. Lithuania is the country with the largest number of emigrants among Eastern European countries. According to the European Migration Network (EMN), Lithuania’s migration indicators calculated per 1000 persons are the greatest comparing with other EU countries. The birthrate has been decreasing, investment into Lithuania’s market and production processes have been reducing, the characteristics of the Lithuanian market have been falling down and the population has been ageing and emigration is an outcome of these processes. Therefore, the aim of the current research is to determine the factors that could have an impact on emigration processes. The methods used for the research are as follows: analysis and systematisation of scientific literature, correlation and regression analysis. The main results showed that the following factors empowering the emigration processes: the level of unemployment, wage and GDP per capita.
