Abstract

This article analyses capability of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) to solve the incompatibility problem of different railway traffic control systems. Systems used in the Europe-an Union countries and issues of the incompatibility of those systems were parsed. Currently, there are more than 20 different national rail traffic control and signalling systems in Europe. All of them are incompatible. The incompatibility is one of the biggest technical barriers while ensuring the cross-border traffic: therefore, trains can-not operate smoothly and continuously through the international railway network. Thus, the cross-border traffic is disrupted. Technical barriers cause the lack of the interoperability. Consequently, technical inefficiency becomes a serious obstacle for the rail freight market and the competitiveness of the sector cannot be maintained. The Europe-an Rail Traffic Management System project has been set up to create a unique signalling and communication standard throughout Europe. It is a major industrial project being implemented by Europe, a project that can serve to make rail transport more interoperable and competitive.
