Applying GIS for transportation means

Abstract

The paper discusses the applying Geographical information systems (GIS) for transportation means. The object of the article is satellite navigation systems application opportunities for transportation means. The study presents GIS concept and bene-fits towards route analysis, its planning and optimisation, tracking and operating. Satellite navigation systems applied for transportation means are analyses in the article as well as tracking and quality control systems are evaluates, route planning programmes and their adaptation are also overviews. After analysis of theoretical GIS for transportation means aspects, the study confirms the assumption that for transportation means the most efficient can be used „ArcLogistics“, „ArcInfo“ and „ArcView“ software.
